Literature Text

One) You fell off of the roof during a dragon spotting lesson.

Two) You dropped an axe on your own foot, thankfully it wasn't the sharp side.

Three) You tied the dragon saddle to yourself. Who does that?

Needless to say these actions plus more have made you the laughingstock of the whole village.

"Study up and practice so you don't end up like ______ (l/n)," people would say behind your back. You were beyond help when it came to dragon fighting and riding.

Best of all, today you and your group were going to the arena, your instructor believes in learning on the job. You weren't fighting any dragons or anything but you were going to learn about some of the different types to ready yourself for riding lessons. This will be the first time you have ever gotten close to a dragon. Sure you saw them when people rode them or when they attacked your village, but you were normally that one person who is running around frantically trying to find a way to help. You have learned to just back off and let the experts do their job.

You walked into the arena and your instructor, Trystan, began his lesson. Pointing to one prison cell like cage he began, "This is an English Dimondtail. Can anyone tell me about it?"

You knew nothing about the dragon but the girl standing next to you shot her hand up, "Its a dragon that originated in England and it is known for its extremely hard tail which it often uses as a weapon."

"Good," Trystan carried on but you didn't pay much attention. There was one cage that caught your eye and you waited for that dragon to be explained to you. But it wasn't. Before you knew it the lesson was over and the cage you had your sights set on was ignored.

You ran up to your instructor, "Wait! What about that one over there?" you pointed to the cage of to the side.

Trystan just shook his head, "Nasty dragon that is. Bad tempered, won't let anyone near him. Its a rare German Zipperback."

Afterward you did some research on the dragon. Apparently it was extremely rare and only few were said to exist; you felt a pang knowing one was locked up. You slipped out in the late evening and walked into the dragon arena.

This isn't a good idea. At all. you thought. But you felt like you were drawn to this dragon.

Slowly walking up to the cage you peered inside.

Nasty dragon? Hale naw. He was beautiful. He wasn’t large but looked very muscular. Yellow scales gleamed and shimmered in the sunset light that made its way into the cell, piercing blue eyes stared into your (e/c) ones at you as you approached. You read a plaque that was next to the cage.

"Ludwig huh?" you said aloud. The dragon let out a little puff of dark smoke. You leaned against the bars, "You're beautiful." You wanted to see the dragon in full light, his wings spread wide soaring through the air; but you also read that these dragons were very dangerous.

The dragon gave you a quizzical look then slowly stood up. You took a step back away from the bars at it walked toward you lifting its head.

  "Hi," you tried.

The dragon gave another puff of smoke before pressing his nose to the bar. Hesitantly you held out a hand. Lesson one, don't do that, it was the first thing you learned. A dragon will not hesitate to make a meal out of you, even just parts of you; but you did anyway.

Ludwig allowed you to stroke the top of his nose and you smiled.

"What are you doing?" you sprang backwards and turned around meeting the gaze of your instructor.

"Oh I was- um... just," you stammered on.

Trystan held his hand up to silence you, "I am surprised you got close to that dragon without being killed. I was wondering why you were so interested in him."

"Hes not nasty," you defended looking at the dragon, "hes sweet! Look at him!" you pointed in the cage, "And hes all locked up..."

"No one has ever tamed a German Zipperback. Ever. Many have tried but never lived to tell the tale."

"I know. I read a book," you muttered off to the side.

"You are most definitely not rider material," he mused ignoring your mutter, "And yet you just waltz in here and start petting the dragon no one has been able to tame," your instructor's green eyes glinted with amusement and curiosity.

The dragon gave a huff of blue fire before pressing himself against the bars.

"Now now Ludwig," your teacher chided, "Perhaps this would be the dragon you would like to select for riding?"

Each rider selects a dragon to be their companion, but it was hard choosing dragons. If you didn't choose wisely you could be killed. You glanced back at the dragon who stared at you with his intelligent blue eyes, almost like he understood your whole conversation before nodding.

"Interesting choice, but riding doesn't start until tomorrow. Come along, we'll see what the morning brings us."

That morning you found yourself carrying a huge saddle with you to the arena.

"Hehe I want to see how ______ jacks this up," Alfred chuckled and you stuck your tongue out.

Apparently you were also first causing the others to laugh. "What dragon are you selecting?" the teacher asked innocently and you glanced at Ludwig's cage.

"The... German Zipperback," you said quietly. Everyone else started whispering.

  "Whoa what?"

"You can't ride a German Zipperback."

  "She's dead."

You ignored their comments and slid up to the bars. Ludwig padded up to you with a glint in his eyes.

"First you need to try and establish trust," Trystan was explaining to everyone with a sly smile in your direction.

You held out your hand and began petting Ludwig as he purred. You smiled widely at his reaction.

"Normally you open the cage first..." you glanced at the keys along the wall and opened the cage as everyone cowered in the back.

"Saddle the dragon," this took a while. Eventually you had a saddle strapped onto the yellow scales, which looked much better in the light.

"Mount and take off," you hopped onto the saddle your stomach dropping.
  "Don't fall off," Trystan mused.

"Thats all the instruction you're going to give me?!" you cried holding onto the reins.

"I believe in learning on the job," he said and gave a loud whistle.

Ludwig took off soaring out of the arena with you screaming on his back. The dragon flew over the village and people stared up at you both in confusion. Eventually you got the hang of it. Ludwig let you control the reins and you flew back to the arena.

"How do I land?!" you shrieked.

Ludwig landed himself and you sat frozen atop the saddle.

  "That was... amazing!"

  ~Timeskip~

You didn't need to take anymore riding lessons because you perfected the first ride. Some of your group weren't so lucky. Arthur fell off his dragon at liftoff, Alfred couldn't even get onto his.

This means that you got to keep Ludwig as your companion. Everyone figured you were meant for eachother because he never left your side but growled at anyone else who approached him.

He had a lot of weird antics; he even cleaned your house once because you threw your things all over the floor. A lot of his actions reminded you of a human to the point you wondered if he actually was one. But that was ridiculous.

"You're a weird one..." you said staring at your now clean house. He just huffed and padded around your room.

You may have perfected riding but you were still hopeless when it came to everything else. However, no one dared make fun of you with Ludwig by your side.

What size is he? I can't imagine a riding dragon being big enough to fit inside my home and walk around without knocking stuff over. XD
