Literature Text

You called out the name of the newspaper headline multiple times, advertising your product. A few people stopped by and bought a paper from you. By midday you had sold almost half of your papers, so in other words business was booming.

You took a break around that time to eat a little piece of bread and decided to read through the paper. You were literate, yes, not many of you were. You almost choked at what you read a little ways into the paper.

'Will the war ((Spanish-American)) cause newspaper prices to go up?' Is what the article read. You stared at it for a moment before standing up. You needed to finish your day so you could see what this was about.

Grabbing your bundle of papers you abruptly began walking, looking over when you heard footsteps coming toward you. You were immediately thrown to the ground by a force hitting your side. You skidded a few feet, whatever hit you had some strength behind it, or maybe you were just weak. Dizzy, you had one hand around your papers and the other on you hat.

"Oh I am so sorry man," you heard a voice say before you were pulled to your feet. You were confused, most people would yell at you for getting in their way, steal a newspaper and walk away.

"Its fine," you assured looking up at the other person. Instantly your breath caught in your throat.

You weren't sure what you noticed first; the boy was only maybe a year or two older than you with sparkling blue eyes with a pair of glasses and dark blonde hair. He was also wearing a very nice clothes, crisp and clean, also very expensive looking.

Remember how I mentioned it was harder to hide the fact you were a girl now that you have gotten older? Sure there were a few obvious reasons to why that was, but your emotions got in the way too.

Your face flushed red and looked away, "Sorry."

"No, no it was my fault," the boy replied, "I wasn't watching where I was going."

"Oh..." you whispered then held out your bundle of papers, "Wanna buy a newspaper?" you asked awkwardly.

"Why not," he gave you a few cents and you handed him a paper which he tucked under his arm before holding a hand out to you, "The name is Alfred Jones."

  You shook his hand, "(b/n)(l/n)."

"Nice to meet you (b/n)," he bowed his head, "But right now I must be going. See you around!" he waved happily and took off in a different direction.

You were left staring curiously after him. That was the nicest anyone has treated you since... ever actually. Not to mention he was really attractive. You counted the amount of money he gave you, noticing with a start he gave at least ten extra cents.

  ~*~*~*~

You finished selling your papers earlier than you ever have and walked around town. You were jittery for the rest of the day until your returned to the newsboy house that evening.

Stories were being tossed around the house but you didn't feel like sharing your encounter.

"I saw this beautiful girl," one boy was rambling, "Asked her if she wanted to buy a paper. She said yes and gave me a little extra for a tip," he smiled and the other boys laughed.

"What about you (b/n)? You're quiet today," the boy mused and they all looked at you.

"Must have had a run in like yours," another boy jested and they laughed. Your face turned crimson.

  "No," you snapped.

"Look at 'em! 'Es turnin red!" the boys laughed and you couldn't help but smile. The joking wasn't in a cruel manner.

"What was she like?" someone teased. You decided to answer carefully.

"She had blue eyes, and dark blonde hair," you started, "She was dressed in expensive clothing and... oh! She had glasses. She was in a hurry, I don't know why; but she bought a newspaper and gave me ten extra cents for it," you finished up your story and cat whistles were heard. You tried not to laugh because you were envisioning, not a girl, but the boy called Alfred Jones.

You repositioned the hat on your head and stalked out of the room back outside onto the streets. It was dark now, the calls of a few newsboys trying to sell off their last few papers echoed around the city.

You smiled wondering what tomorrow would bring you.
